In addition, he was given piano lessons by his grandmother, a concert pianist, from the age of 7. Not until the age of 17 did he start studying the flute at the Royal Academy of Music in The Hague. This did not prevent him from continuing to seek adventure, however, by playing in the streets together with friends in France, Germany, Switzerland, the United States, Canada, Ireland, Denmark, Spain and even Morocco. Busking was the ideal way to meet other people and come into contact with other cultures. In addition to a long period of involvement in Irish folkmusic (Kings Galliard, a group that toured Europe many times), Jan Erik has displayed his ever broad musical interest by forays into such diverse styles as the Blues, Flamenco and Bolivian Andes music. In 1980, Jan Erik started working together with music and dance (YUCA and PANDORA). Since then, his music has provided ample opportunity for dance and can accordingly be described as music that invites one to dance. His musical interest has also expanded to include midi-instruments. Yet this has never diminished his love for the traditional South American music, for example (he went on three extended trips to the Andes and Brazil). This explains why this CD also features compositions from VOF Pandora productions with world music clearly inspired by folk music. The fact that music is capable of bringing people together, and the knowledge that mutual influence continually engenders new styles will certainly help create a world in which the harmonic coexistence of all people will be considered natural. |
